The Beauty of Castle Black
As the primary headquarters of the Night’s Watch, Castle Black stands as a testament to the dedication and sacrifice of its members. Despite its brutal and uncomfortable nature, there is a certain beauty that can be found within its walls.
The Night’s Watch Oath
“Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.” – The Night’s Watch Oath
The History of Castle Black
Castle Black, located roughly halfway along the length of the Wall on its southern side, serves as the dark and chilling home to the Night’s Watch. Originally, Castle Black was one of only three manned castles left on the Wall. However, as the centuries passed and the numbers of the Night’s Watch dwindled, they were forced to abandon sixteen of these castles.
Despite the loss of these other castles, Castle Black remains a symbol of the Night’s Watch’s commitment to protecting the realms of men. It is a place where men leave behind their former lives, taking on new identities as defenders of the Wall.
Within the walls of Castle Black, the members of the Night’s Watch live a harsh and disciplined existence. They take no wives, hold no lands, and father no children. Their purpose is singular – to stand as the sword in the darkness, the watcher on the walls, and the shield that guards against the threats beyond the Wall.
While life at Castle Black may be brutal and uncomfortable, there is a certain beauty that can be found in the unwavering dedication of its members. They have chosen a life of sacrifice, forsaking personal glory and comfort for the greater good.
Castle Black serves as a constant reminder of the dangers that lie beyond the Wall. It is a place where men come to face their fears, to prove their worth, and to protect the realms of men from the terrors that lurk in the darkness.
So, while Castle Black may not be a traditional place of beauty, it holds a unique and haunting allure. It stands as a testament to the strength and resolve of the Night’s Watch, a beacon of hope in a world threatened by darkness.
