The Beauty of Castle Black

As the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, I have spent many nights at Castle Black, and despite its brutal and uncomfortable nature, I have found it surprisingly beautiful in its own way.

The Night’s Watch Oath

“Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.” – The Night’s Watch Oath

The Headquarters of the Night’s Watch

Castle Black serves as the primary headquarters of the Night’s Watch. It is strategically located roughly halfway along the length of the Wall on its southern side, at the northern end of the Kingsroad. Despite its dark and chilling atmosphere, it remains a steadfast home to the dedicated men of the Night’s Watch.

Originally, Castle Black was one of only three manned castles left on the Wall. However, as the centuries passed and the numbers of the Night’s Watch dwindled, they were forced to abandon sixteen of these castles. Castle Black stands as a testament to the enduring strength and determination of the Night’s Watch.

Within the walls of Castle Black, the Night’s Watch carries out their solemn duty of defending the realms of men from the dangers that lie beyond the Wall. They are the sword in the darkness, the watchers on the walls, and the shields that protect the realms of men.

Life at Castle Black is far from comfortable. The harsh conditions and constant threat of danger create a challenging environment for its garrison. However, it is precisely this harshness that lends a unique beauty to the castle. The starkness of the landscape, the chilling winds that whip through the courtyard, and the knowledge that every man within the castle walls is dedicated to a greater purpose all contribute to the haunting beauty of Castle Black.

As the Lord Commander, I have come to appreciate the beauty of Castle Black in its own way. It is a place where honor, duty, and sacrifice are valued above all else. The men who take the black and swear their lives to the Night’s Watch are bound together by a shared purpose and a deep sense of camaraderie.

So, while Castle Black may not be the most comfortable or glamorous of homes, it holds a unique beauty that can only be truly appreciated by those who have dedicated their lives to the Night’s Watch. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made and the noble purpose that the Night’s Watch serves in protecting the realms of men.
